That however will&nbsp;not stop over 2,500 people from taking the annual New Year’s Day plunge to help benefit the <a href="http://so-sc.org/cgi-bin/p/awtp-home.cgi?d=special-olympics-south-carolina" target=_blank><font color=#b85b5a>South Carolina&nbsp;chapter of Special Olympics</font></a>. What started&nbsp;almost&nbsp;20 years ago as a drunken dare between friends at <a href="http://charleston.diningguide.com/data/d100221.htm" target=_blank><font color=#b85b5a>Dunleavy’s Pub</font></a>, this&nbsp;event has catapulted into a well known tradition bringing in more people than Memorial Day and the 4Th of July to <a href="http://www.sullivansisland-sc.com/" target=_blank><font color=#b85b5a>Sullivan’s Island, SC</font></a>. In 2002 the event teamed&nbsp;up to help the Special Olympics and has raised over $200,000 for the organization.&nbsp;Some people take pledges to plunge, while others just do it for the fun.&nbsp;Even if you decide to stay warm on the sand, there is still fun to be had. <h2><font color=#3f556c>James Island Rich with History</font></h2>
<p>During the 19th century, plantations were built on <a title="James Island Real Estate for Sale" href="http://www.jamesislandrealestateguide.com/"><font color=#800080>James Island</font></a>, along with the development of the village of Secessionville, a summer retreat for plantation owners. Indigo, cotton &amp; rice were cultivated and the raising of beef cattle was quite lucrative. Numerous battle sites and historic buildings, including former slave quarters are still here today.</p>
<p>The Civil War began on James Island the morning of April 12, 1861. The Confederate Forces at Fort Johnson fired upon the Union occupied <a href="http://www.awod.com/gallery/probono/cwchas/secville.html" target=_blank><font color=#0066cc>Fort Sumter</font></a>. Both forts were located on the island’s northern shore. Much of the fighting in the Charleston area during the remaining years of the Civil War occurred on James Island and it’s close neighbor, Morris Island, as Union troops tried to invade Charleston from the south from their base at Folly Beach.</p>
<p>After the war, the large plantations were no longer working and small farms began to be the norm. This remained true until the 1960’s. The opening of the James Island Expressway or James Island Connector in 1993 made the island much more accessible and a prime location for development. </p>

<p>These are some of the lessons learned by business leaders who earlier this month took part in the "Principal for a Day" program and shadowed real public school principals in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. </p>
<p>Ann Marconi, whose Principal for a Day experience this year was her third, said she's found out principals are never at rest. </p>
<p>"The first time I did it," Marconi said of her PFD experiences, "I was amazed. I know now to wear comfortable shoes. They (principals) don't sit down. They are constantly on the move," Marconi said of the principals she has spent time with. </p>
<p>This year, Marconi spent the day with Principal David Colwell at the Charleston County Charter School of Math and Science, a King Street school holding classes for grades six through 10. </p>
<p>An agent with Exit Realty, Marconi said she saw a "big difference" in the structures provided at the "middle" school on King Street school and the two elementary schools where she previously served as PFDs. "At the elementary schools, the children obviously need more structure, but at this stage, they get off the bus and know where to go," Marconi observed. "Little kids will just run up and give you a hug. But here they are grown up now."</p>
<p>Colwell said Marconi made stops at many classes, spoke with teachers and observed the yearbook-preparation class. "We tried to give Ms. Marconi a taste of everything, and I think we showed her every grade level," he said. </p>
<p>PFD is a national program that the Charleston County School District joined in 2004. The Education Foundation, which serves as an intermediary between the business and education communities, said PFD has grown each year, and last year 144 business leaders took part in the three local counties. </p>
<p>The program is "an effective strategy for building a stronger foundation between businesses and schools and can lead to lasting relationships and creative ideas for engaging small and large businesses in the education of students," said Emily Watts, public relations manager for the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. </p>
<p>Wando High School Principal Lucy Beckham has participated in the chamber-sponsored event that puts businessmen and women in the principal's place for a day for the past six consecutive years. </p>
<p>Beckham said it's been valuable because it's given her insight into how decisions are made in the business world. But it's also strengthened relationships with businesses that support the school. </p>
<p>Wando Principal for a Day Curtis Bakle, a chemical engineer with BP, spent roughly 45 minutes of it in an engineering class while Beckham dealt with personnel issues that couldn't be discussed in Bakle's presence. </p>
<p>Bakle said his employer, BP American, likes to give back, which is why he chose to participate. </p>
<p>"The kids they are teaching today might be our workers tomorrow," Bakle said. </p>
<p>BP gave the engineering program a $25,000 grant three years ago. Private funding is essential to the program, which uses tools such as robots, flight simulators, and a wind tunnels to put theories to practice. </p>
<p>Most of the equipment in the engineering room with the exception of slate tables and computers were funded through support from the community, said teacher David Roemer. </p>
<p>At Thomas Cario Middle School, John Ciccarelli, a Mount Pleasant architect, watched Principal Shari Bouis, intently gauging her reaction to her surroundings. </p>
<p>Ciccarelli, who operates John Ciccarelli Architect LLC, took special interest in the principal program because he's designed schools in the past. He quizzed Bouis over what worked and what didn't as they walked through the middle school building. </p>
<p>Cathy Myatt, owner of Myatt Air Conditioning on Folly Road, said her day with James Island Elementary School Principal Christy Thompson was eye-opening. A lot of dedication and energy is needed by a principal, Myatt said. </p>
<p>"I am just surprised at how busy she is. She never gets to sit down," Myatt said, who added that the paperwork required of a principal seems inordinate. </p>
<p>Cole Hendon, manager of First Federal of Charleston's Ashley Avenue branch, studied for the day under Stono Park Elementary School Principal Ruth Taylor. </p>
<p>"I think it's important for business leaders to take active and proactive stances in education," Hendon said, adding that today's youths "are the leaders of tomorrow," and schools can do more in partnerships with business. </p>
<p>Taylor said Hendon got classroom experience and saw the staff preparing for an annual data accountability review. "He's had a good sample of things we have to deal with," Taylor said. </p>
<p>Hendon said he was impressed with the professionalism he saw in teachers. "Every teacher that I've met has done it with a smile on their face and a passion," he added. </p>
